Towards modelling of corrugation ridges at ice-sheet grounding lines

چکیده

Abstract. Improvements in the resolution of sea-floor mapping techniques have revealed extremely regular, sub-metre-scale ridge landforms produced by tidal flexure ice-shelf grounding lines as they retreated very rapidly (i.e. at rates several kilometres per year). Guided such novel observations from Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica, we present three mathematical models for formation these corrugation ridges a tidally migrating line (that is retreating constant rate), where each formed either till flux to line, extrusion or resuspension and transport grains grounding-zone bed. We find that both (squeezing out like toothpaste ice sheet re-settles on sea floor) material can qualitatively reproduce delicate described observations. By considering known properties subglacial sediments, agree with existing schematic most likely mechanism low-tide position, essentially preserving an imprint ice-sheet it retreated. However, when realistic (shallow) bed slopes are used simulations, start overprint one another, suggesting that, preserve regular been observed, retreat (driven dynamic thinning?) may be even higher than previously thought.

Rapid bottom melting widespread near Antarctic Ice Sheet grounding lines.

As continental ice from Antarctica reaches the grounding line and begins to float, its underside melts into the ocean. Results obtained with satellite radar interferometry reveal that bottom melt rates experienced by large outlet glaciers near their grounding lines are far higher than generally assumed. The melting rate is positively correlated with thermal forcing, increasing by 1 meter per ye...

Grounding line migration in an adaptive mesh ice sheet model

Grounding line migration is a key process affecting the stability of marine ice sheets such as the West Antarctic ice sheet. Recent studies have shown that ice sheet models employing a fixed spatial grid (such as are commonly used for whole ice sheet simulations) cannot be used to solve this problem in a robust manner. We have developed a one-dimensional (vertically integrated) “shelfy stream” ...

Ice sheet grounding line dynamics: Steady states, stability, and hysteresis

[1] The ice sheet–ice shelf transition zone plays an important role in controlling marine ice sheet dynamics, as it determines the rate at which ice flows out of the grounded part of the ice sheet. Together with accumulation, this outflow is the main control on the mass balance of the grounded sheet. In this paper, we verify the results of a boundary layer theory for ice flux in the transition ...
